Jimmy - old Jimmy

February 17th 2008 00:24
Jimmy- old Jimmy...

Jimmy wouldn’t even take offense to that name. He tells me every time I see him that his days are nearly over and that when I leave it will be the last time I will see him alive. I tell him to shut up, as I will be back. Positive thinking!
I met Jimmy at the pub I work at in Glebe. He sits on the right hand corner of the bar and it just so happens that he has sat right in that very spot for most of his adult life. He even has a plaque that says ‘Jimmy’ to tell all other patrons not to sit where Jimmy sits.
What I really think of Jimmy is that he has a heart of gold but he has battered his soul with self-inflicted pain. He has some problems that he hasn’t dealt with leaving him lonely in his older years. I have been told he now has dementia although he himself has never told me… as I think it makes him feel incapable. I don’t ask him about this part of his life as I don’t think it is of importance.

When I walk through the door Jimmy always makes me feel welcome and I love him for it. People don’t realize just how large an effect they have on others. When I asked Jimmy if he would tell me his story he just looked at me in amazement. I truly think has something to say but I know he won’t. He gets put in my so called category of ‘unwilling’ as for him to bring up every deep aspect of his life would be harder than anything else. I respect that and I move on. This doesn’t mean I can’t talk about him from my own point of view though.
He told me today he knows the Packers and how he went to one of their weddings. He tells me, ‘Ah the drugs, the surfing, the mates…. Those were good times. That fella was just as corrupt as us fellas’. His mate lives in the lighthouse on the eastern point of Australia and many a beautiful sunsets Jimmy has seen from there. As he embarks on another trip to Byron and I leave for London, I am sad to think I will never ever see Jimmy again. His unusual sense of character will stay with me forever though as someone he ordinary indeed turned out extraordinary.

Before I leave with a goodbye, Jimmy tells me he will cry for 12 days. These simple words would not even come out of some of my friend’s mouths and that’s when you realise some people are truly special and unique. He is just none of the bullshit that sometimes rules this world we live in. Only truth comes from Jimmy and I appreciate every part of every word.
