Jerry ...

Jerry, 32, is unlike anyone I have ever met. A Byron hippie at heart was my first impression as I saw him amongst the waves of Byron main beach. And that impression was right. His dreadlocks are tied up into a headband and his skin is a rough brown reflective of his life hardships.
I am straight away intrigued with how he looks at life. I want to know his motives, his attitudes, and the reasons why he befriended me. While diving under the waves I can straight away tell he is just a cruisey guy looking to do no harm but chat.
I found out that he and his friend, Max were indeed locals as I had already assumed and they too were heading off to the Blues and Roots festival, in which we also had tickets. So we head up to the pub after drip drying from the beach and hit up a beer in preparation for the festival.
So what I really want to talk about is Jerry’s story… and yes that’s not Jerry Springer, or Jerry Hall… Its just Jerry. He runs his own business that produces and sells fisherman styled clothes and has just finished a course in website management and design. From the outside he seems like any other pot-smoking hippie, but he is quite wise and smart with his head on his shoulders. We talk about tarot reading and physics and his response is, ‘I don’t believe in knowing the future as then we will have preconceived ideas about what we should do and therefore we will manifest our lives instead of living them.’ I take this in and breathe it out… knowing it’s something I’ll take with me. He knows what he is talking about and I can tell he doesn’t talk shit. What you see is what you get and he won’t care what you or anyone else thinks of him. His eyes are warm with experience though and he will look after you if need be.
Every time I go to Byron I just happen to run into Jerry. He is just one of those characters. Last time I saw Jerry he was on his way to buy Gingko to fulfil his beer recipe in which him and Max were preparing at home. I went along for a ride in Jerry’s small little jeep that has no doors or roof and saw the actual making of beer. To make drinking beer not so bad for your body they place lemongrass and herbs into the mixtures. Even drinking beer is healthy. Who would have thought?
Jerry is always at the markets on a Sunday. Sometimes you can see him at festivals. He seems to stand out, as that’s the only way to find your friends in the crowd. Last time he was dressed as a doctor with a stethoscope and he asked if he could check my heart. Ha. Doctor Love he had written on the back!
So I know I will see him again but I’m certain he will probably be the same old Jerry living life to the full and having a laugh with the boys. I don’t really see him settling down, but in a way he is settled. Settled in the Byron life and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Some would say the hippie canyons eat people up and catch you in their web but I know for a fact that Jerry is not one or the doll bludgers, Byron has many, wasting his days away.
Stay tuned for Max’s story… and his Physco now ‘ex’ girlfriend…
