Hugh seems lost in Spain but I think he is actually a little lost within his mind.
He is 32 and Canadian but has spent a lot of his life travelling around Europe for work commitments. At the moment he is learning Spanish in Cadiz, in my class.
I feel like he is here to make friends, well that is what he has told me, but I truly think he is on some kind of mission to find a partner. Maybe someone to fill the void, fill the space that his past girlfriend once occupied.
He talks about her often and I am yet a stranger to him. I always feel that when someone speaks about a certain person from the past in passing conversation they have meant a lot more to the person then they would be able to admit. Ask a personal question like that to someone, and the real answer is never first and forth most as there is always the deeper meaning hiding behind the person’s eyes.
He doesn’t even realise he is bringing her to the table as he is just so used to talking about his other half. I think 5 years would do that to you. Hugh tells me he is ‘timido’ in Spanish class even though I only see confidence within him. I would think at 32 you should know yourself fairly well and well enough to be proud of whom you are. He is actually a really nice person, and can be really funny at times. Sometimes he talks back to the teacher in Spanish and just pulls things out of nowhere.
He gives me compliments and encourages me with my Spanish, even bringing a Spanish guy from his flat so that I could practise! I can only see good within him and therefore I know he will find his way. His constant travelling could have been a disadvantage for him but I know somewhere out there in the world there is someone for him because I’m a hopeless romantic.
