Annette always sits at a table for two alone. I take away the extra set of cutlery and feel as though I’m making note of the loneliness that hangs by her every word and hurts her all the more even though this is my routine, in my job. She always asks to order her drink with her meal. Which is actually one of the few times I’ve heard that request. I wonder if that means that less attention will be drawn towards her at the table or if she is just particular about her ways. She always orders wine. She orders a different wine with a different meal each night. She always eats quickly. I wonder what she will do when she has tried everything on our menu. I mean will she simply start all over again or only pick what she thought was best? When she is finished she stands abruptly to leave straight away. Her company card pays and she never leaves a tip. Today this certain day she turns to me and says thankyou bubye now as though I am a customer at the grocery store. I wonder if she is a checkout chick. She looks more like a librarian… or an academic. I’m actually thinking maybe a professor! How does someone so smart and nice and friendly simply have no friends to have dinner with?
